RGB or white LED bar: which one suits your setup
Sunrise IT · 19 August 2026
Once you know you want an LED bar for your monitor, the next question is almost always the same: white or RGB? The short answer is that it depends on what you use your desk for the rest of the day, not on which one "looks cooler". Let's look at it calmly.
What both have in common
This needs to be clear first, because it causes confusion: on both versions, the light that illuminates your desk for work is white light aimed down at the keyboard and desk. That part does not change. Both avoid screen glare in the same way, both are USB powered and both install the same way, resting on the monitor with a counterweight.
The difference is what the RGB version adds at the back.
The white bar: for anyone who just wants to work better
If you mainly use the computer to study, work from home or browse, and what you want is to stop straining your eyes at night, the 30 cm LED bar does exactly that and nothing more. Three white temperatures, simple touch control, and that is it. Nothing to configure and no colour mode you will not use.
It is also the logical choice if your desk is in a bedroom or a shared space, where a wall lit up in colours may not fit the rest of the décor.
The RGB: when your desk is also your corner
The RGB LED bar, available in 40 and 44 cm, does the same as the white one at the front, but at the back it projects coloured light onto the wall. It is the backlight effect you see on gaming setups: a halo of colour around the monitor that adds depth and atmosphere without dazzling.
The two lights are controlled separately. You can have only the white one on while you work, only the ambient RGB at night while watching a series, or both at once. It is not two products in one pack: it is one product with two independent functions.
It makes sense if you spend time at the monitor gaming, watching content or simply like your corner to have personality. It is also the most photogenic option if you take photos or videos of your setup.
Is RGB worth paying more for?
It depends on whether you will really use the colour. If you know the ambient light will not matter to you in a month, the white one does the job perfectly and you do not pay for something you will not switch on. If you like the idea of a desk with more atmosphere, the extra makes sense: it is not a different product with one light less, it is literally the same product with an added function.
One thing that does change: the length
The white version is 30 cm and the RGB comes in 40 and 44 cm, so the choice also depends on your screen size. As a rule, 30 cm fits well up to 24 inches, and from 24 inches up 40 or 44 cm is better. You will find it in detail in the guide by screen size.
In short
Both solve the same real problem: screen glare and eye strain when working at night. The question is not which one is better, but whether you want your desk to be just a well-lit place to work, or also a space with atmosphere when you want it.
If you want to check compatibility with your screen before deciding, this guide covers curved monitors, thin bezels and laptops. And if you are still weighing whether it is worth it compared with the lamp you already have, here we compare an LED bar and a desk lamp.
